High Performance Vision Training Improves Batting Average Statistics for University of Cincinnati Baseball Players

Purpose: Baseball requires an incredible amount of visual acuity and eye-hand coordination, especially for the batters. The learning objective of this work is to observe that traditional vision training as part of injury prevention or conditioning can be added to a team’s training schedule to improve some performance parameters such as batting and hitting. Methods: All players for the 2010 to 2011 season underwent normal preseason physicals and baseline testing that is standard for the University of Cincinnati Athletics Department. Body Alarm and Reaction Sports Vision

The moment in sports competition when one’s body is suddenly assaulted results in the body alarm reaction (BAR). Visual changes occur by direct end organ (ciliary muscle) sympathetic nervous system activation, which are not immediately related to the systemic release of noradrenaline. This reaction is in response to an unexpected and sudden change of events in one’s environment. The dual nature response of sympathetic nervous system activation is necessary to fully explain visual changes during the body alarm reaction found in  moments of intense sports conflict. Effect of Binocular Versus Monocular Viewing on Golf Putting Accuracy

The purpose of this experiment was to  study the role of binocular vision, including both stereopsis and binocular  vergence, on the complex task of golf putting. The putting accuracy of 16, visuallynormal, inexperienced golfers (range 23-  66 years, mean=35 years) was assessed for small (3cm) and large (12cm) targets located at 3, 6, and 9 feet with their  distance corrective lenses in place. Subjects performed the task under either normal binocular or monocular viewing conditions. Putting accuracy (% successful putts) was   significantly better under binocular versus monocular viewing conditions for the smaller target. This was true for 10 out of 12 (83%, p=0.019), 11 out  of 12 (92%, p=0.003), and 12 out of 12 (100%, p<0.001) of the subjects for the 3-, 6-, and 9-foot test distances, respectively. Read more...

ABSTRACT: Elite sports performance fundamentally relies on a complex set of brain functions engaged once visual signals are relayed from the eye. In this review, we overview a series of these neural mechanisms—focusing specifically on the critical role of attention in sculpting the visual processing that takes place leading up to a decision. These brain functions are introduced within the theoretical concept of the ‘Perception–Action Cycle.’ Vision does not stop at the eye but requires a coordinated set of brain mechanisms called on to convert visual input into rapid decisions about action.
